Turnout for today’s Referendums voting appears locally to be slow but steady.
There are 275 polling booths across the two counties – 202 in Kilkenny with 73 in Carlow. (More here).
Stations opened at 7am this morning and by 11am and many areas are still in single digit percentages.
Figures were low early in Galmoy and Bennekerry with just 2% out in Slieverue by 9am while Thomastown had double that an hour later (with up to 10% by midday).
At the same time they were at the 6% mark in Danesfort where it appears the hosting school is without electricity so they’re working off a generator!
In Newtown, Fenagh, where voting typically sees a morning surge, it’s been quieter than usual.
While at Cuffesgrange in Kilkenny about 9% of those eligible to vote had done.
There was “a nice crowd” at St Joseph’s National School in Carlow town at 11am while in Tynock 10% had been in by 11:20am and 8% in Rathvilly by 11:30am.
And things began to pick up in Clogh/Moneenroe before midday but still low in Muckalee at that time.
But also at midday it was 8% in Callan and 10% in Leighlinbridge.
Hope is that there’ll be an increase in turn-out as people head home from work later.
