139 local women accessed abortion services in 2020.
The latest figures from the government show there were 83 in Kilkenny and 56 in Carlow.
The national total of 6,570 is a drop of 1% on the previous year.
The overwhelming majority of these terminations were carried out on women who were in the early stages of their pregnancy.
The Department of Health says 36 women from Northern Ireland travelled here to have an abortion last year.
Helen Stonehouse, from the Abortion Rights Campaign, says “This shows how important abortion is, that even in a global pandemic when we’ve all struggled to access healthcare that we’ve seen roughly the same, similar numbers as last year, we know that people need to access abortion every day and that’s still happening, we’re glad that people have been able to access the abortion that they needed but we’re also concious that people still have had to travel to the UK and struggle to access at times”.
