Irish Water have now told KCLR News that a new process has been put in place at the plant to provide a specific barrier to hydrocarbons and to protect the public supply.

The HSE was also being liaised with to make sure there was no risk to public health.

The Environment Section of the County Council have also managed to stop the spill into the river, after initially having difficulty in locating the source of it.

Irish Water have thanked customers in Carlow for their patience.
