There’s nowhere for customers to park in Urlingford – so says one local councillor.
Mary Hilda Cavanagh’s calling on the county council to develop one for the town.
She’s been telling KCLR News that business has been thriving in the area since the opening of the motorway “We have numerous successful companies, three bus companies, an insurance company, numerous restaurants, a hotel, pharmacy, a wide range of shops. The only carpark we have is a private carpark at the back of a supermarket and it’s not fair for them that people park there & leave their cars there all day. But at the moment there’s nowhere for customers to park because the workers need the spaces along the main street, and those who are carpooling to travel together to wherever they’re working those cars are left there as well. There’s nothing wrong with that but there’s no space for customer parking & we want all of our businesses to thrive and we want more businesses to open but we must provide a carpark in the centre of the town”
Land has been identified as being suitable for such a facility and Cllr Cavanagh says a solution to the issue has been some time coming saying “I had it on the agenda some years ago, but at the time I wasn’t able to identify a site in any shape or form. But I understand from the business people of the town that there is a site now available. I’m asking the council to be active in engaging with the owners of the land and to buy the land & to get funds & develop a carpark.
Cllr Cavanagh raised the issue at the latest meeting of the Castlecomer Municipal District & says “I spoke on the matter & got unanimous support on it from my colleagues and a commitment from the executive that the matter will be pursued. The Director of Services and Area Engineer have committed to make inquiries with the business people of the town & follow this up straight away”.
