Carlow County Council is too reliant on volunteers to keep our streets clean.
That’s according to local councillors who were responding to the council’s Litter Management Plan unveiled at last night’s council meeting.
Concern was raised that Tidy Town volunteers are declining and that the council is too reliant on the community and people enrolled in CE Schemes.
The council said they are hoping to roll out covert C-C-T-V cameras and drones at litter black spots, but couldn’t confirm when that would happen.
Speaking to KCLR, Cllr Fintan Phelan says its important the Local Authority has their own resources in place to deal with littering: ”It’s critically important we don’t over rely on our volunteers to do the heavy lifting. They do trojan work and in some cases there’s only a handful of people doing the work in small towns and villages. We need to put a better system in place. ”
