A local TD has urged elected representatives to “get on with it” as the Dáil resumes its business this morning, following a tense day in the chamber yesterday.

Carlow Kilkenny TD, Peter “Chap” Cleere, made the remarks after business in the Dáil was suspended, following a heated debate and a controversial vote on new speaking arrangements that was pushed through by the Government. The decision sparked outrage among opposition members, with many accusing the Government of undermining parliamentary procedures.

Opposition members were particularly critical of Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, with some claiming that she had lost her credibility by facilitating what they described as a “stroke” by the Government. The accusation refers to the manner in which the vote was handled, which many felt was an attempt to silence dissent and limit the opposition’s ability to speak.

In an interview with KCLR News, Deputy Cleere expressed his frustration, calling the events of yesterday “disgraceful” and pointing to a breakdown in the normal workings of the Dáil. “It’s time to move past the drama and get back to doing the work that the people elected us to do,” he said, adding that the Dáil’s focus should be on addressing pressing issues facing the country rather than internal political conflicts.

The controversy over the vote and its handling has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning whether the Dáil can continue to function effectively in the current political climate.

As the Dáil reconvenes today, all eyes will be on how the situation unfolds and whether the tensions from yesterday will continue to affect proceedings.
