A new outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed in County Laois.
Restriction zones have been established around the turkey farm, after the outbreak was identified in a flock of 30,000 there last Friday.
It’s the latest to have been impacted by outbreaks in recent weeks, including in Carlow earlier this month.
Brendan Soden is the IFA’s poultry vice-chairman and says; “It continues to be a worrying time for all poultry farmers with the news of the latest case last Friday in County Laois, especially for those farmers who grow a small number of turkeys for the Christmas market; they’ve spent a lot of time, money and effort to grow these turkeys and of course they provide the extra income for those farmers for this time of year, there seems to be a lot of this in the environment at present so we continue to urge people to remain vigilent and to follow the Department of Agriculture biosecurity regs and housing order”.
