Gardai are operating over 1,700 checkpoints around the country as part of the annual New Year road safety campaign.
Motorists are being urged to slow down and drive to the conditions in order to arrive at their destinations safely.
David Martin from the Road Safety Authority says people may be travelling on unfamiliar roads visiting friends and family over Christmas so extra care is needed.
186 people have died in road incidents in Ireland in 2025, eight of them on routes across Carlow and Kilkenny.
