This country has reiterated its solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland after a meeting of EU ambassadors.
Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee says she will continue to work closely with the EU on the next steps, over Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries.
The Tánaiste Simon Harris is travelling to Brussels today to meet EU Finance Ministers over the threat of 10% tariffs from February 1st.
Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly says they will try to find ways to de-escalate the disagreement with President Trump, noting; “We need the efforts today of the ministers will be to try and cool matters down and look at some way to bring a stability situation so that we don’t have a war possibly between two NATO, the USA NATO and the EU countries in NATO, that would absolutely be a doomsday situation altogether”.
He adds; “They’re hoping to de-escalate the situation by having diplomatic moves behind the scenes to try and stop it but they’re also of course clearly sending a message to Donald Trump that they cannot back down in this situation so it’s most unfortunate”.
