It’s the first of May and for many that signals the start of Summer.

Bealtaine

What it definitely signifies is the start of festive fun with the rollout of the Bealtaine Festival which celebrates creativity, arts and aging with a host of activities planned for Carlow and Kilkenny right across the month. (Details here).

Roots

The annual Smithwick’s Kilkenny Roots Festival will see music ringing out across our local city with a mix of ticketed and free sessions.

First up is the sold-out Big Star Quintet from 7pm this evening at Set Theatre and from then expect the locality to pulsate for four days (and nights!).

MAYhem

Also today, the build up to the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival officially starts with the addition this year of MAYhem, a month-long offering of daily gigs with comedians.

Including Susie McCabe, Karl Spain, Alison Spittle and Rich Hall (full programme here) with David O’Doherty, Aideen McQueen, William Thompson and Valeria Vulpe kicking it all off at tonight’s launch event.

Yesterday we heard from some of the organisers (check that out here) and later today our Shane O’Keeffe will broadcast from our pop-up studio on The Parade with details of a competition you’ll not want to miss.

Walled Garden

Friday mornings now also see the Walled Garden at Lisnavagh House in Rathvilly, county Carlow open.

You can swing by from 9.30am to 12.30pm, you’ll find more here.

Bank Holiday Weekend

Stay tuned to KCLR right across your Bank Holiday Weekend for all of the action and advice.

Meanwhile, with extra traffic due on all routes for the next few days Gardaí are reminding motorists and their passengers to adhere to laws.
