Chernobyl Children are arriving in Ireland today – some of them are staying in Carlow and Kilkenny

Over 150 Chernobyl Children are touching down in Ireland today – 31 of whom are staying in Kilkenny and Carlow.

Local families are preparing to open their homes to the children and young adults – some of whom have been coming to stay with them for years.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

The Belarussian children – many of whom have severe disabilities – come to stay for four weeks every summer as respite for them.

Speaking to KCLR News, one of the local organisers and hosts, Carmel Everard says planning for their visits takes place throughout the year.
