There has been growing demand for more one-and-two bedroom properties in Carlow.
Some local authority residents are seeking to downsize, while those on the housing waiting list are calling for additional smaller homes.
Local advocates are urging the County Council to prioritise the construction of smaller properties to meet these needs and reduce waiting times.
Speaking to KCLR News, Mayor of Carlow Town Fintan Phelan said that there are challenges with the availability of smaller homes in the County.
“One of the difficulties is that there is a huge need for one-and-two bedroom houses, and not enough one-and-two bedroom houses coming through the stream, so that’s something that needs to be ramped up.”
Continuing, Cllr. Phelan noted that “yes, there are families that want to downsize their house, but unfortunately, we don’t have the one-or-two beds available there at the moment to help people to downsize.”
He concluded by stating that “that’s something that I know council officials are working actively on.”
