Our local authorities are warning against illegal dumping after a number of recent incidents.
Carlow County Council say over 200 tyres have been recovered from the slopes of Mount Leinster having been “deliberately rolled down the mountainside, making their recovery extremely difficult and hazardous”.
They add that “This type of illegal dumping not only scars the landscape but poses a serious risk to local wildlife, water quality, and the wider environment.”
Crews were helped by the local farming community in retrieving the items – Senior Executive Officer Liam Carroll notes; “This incident highlights the reckless disregard some individuals have for our natural environment. Illegal dumping of this scale causes long-lasting environmental damage and places an unfair burden on local communities and public resources. We are extremely grateful to the local farmers who assisted in what was a very challenging recovery effort.”
Carlow County Council continues to investigate this matter and reminds the public that illegal dumping is a serious offence. If you witness dumping activity or if you have any information on this incident, please report it in confidence to [email protected] or by calling 059 9136231.
KCLR News’ Edwina Grace has been finding out more from Mr Carroll, who previously headed up the County Fire and Rescue Services;
While their Kilkenny counterparts too are reminding that there are no excuses for illegal dumping, as part of an ongoing anti-dumping and anti-fly tipping campaign focused on promoting accessible and responsible waste disposal options.They’ve had increased reports of illegal dumping across the county and so are placing a renewed emphasis on awareness, convenience and accountability, highlighting the range of legal waste disposal alternatives available to households and businesses.
Central to the campaign is the promotion of local Civic Amenity Sites, including Dunmore Recycling Centre and Granny Recycling Centre, which provide safe, affordable and environmentally responsible options for disposing of a wide variety of waste materials.Fiona Deegan, Director of Service for Kilkenny County Council’s Environment Department says; “There is always a better option. Illegal dumping and fly-tipping damage our environment, our communities and ultimately cost taxpayers money. Kilkenny County Council has invested significantly in a network of bring centres around the city and county as well as our Civic Amenity Sites to provide affordable and convenient alternatives to support convenient options for waste disposal. There is simply no justification for dumping waste illegally.”
