Kilkennys Cian Kenny has been speaking about the pressure of taking frees after Sunday’s narrow win over Waterford at UPMC Nowlan Park.
Kenny struck six points from placed balls during the game, including the injury-time free that sealed the victory for the Cats. Speaking on the KCLR Hurling Podcast, he explained his mindset as he stepped up to take the decisive score.
“You’re trying to get your heart rate down and take as much time as possible, just so when you know it’s ready. I was just concentrating on the lift and trying to get a clean strike. When I heard the crowd behind me, I kind of knew straight away it was going to go over, so I was buzzing when that was finished.
There was pressure there obviously — you know you’re either going to win it for Kilkenny or you’re not. But it’s just trying to calm it down. You had lads around you coming up and telling you to relax and just do your thing, and thankfully it worked out.”
Kilkenny now turn their attention to their next challenge, with Cork visiting Nowlan Park this Sunday.
Meanwhile, Mossie Keoghan has been named on the GAA Hurling Team of the Week following his performance against Waterford. The Tullaroan GAA forward scored 1–2 in Sunday’s win.
