A Carlow-based TD is calling on the government to provide extra funding to Carlow County Council to absorb “abnormals” on construction sites.
Catherine Callaghan says the local authority is actively addressing vacant and derelict sites, with a focus on building town-centre housing for older people.
The Fine Gael deputy says this would encourage downsizing, freeing up larger family homes (two to four bedrooms) for others.
Speaking in the Dáil Chamber, Catherine Callaghan said the cost of abnormals, such as decontamination or utility upgrades, is eating away at the local authority’s budget.
“One such site I am aware of in the Council’s ownership will cost close to €1m to bring it to a build-ready position due to the nature of its previous use.” said Catherine.
“So if costs like this were borne by central government, it would allow CarlowLocal Authority to more quickly fulfil its ambition for bringing Carlow Town Centre back to life and increased housing supply for the people in Carlow.” she added.
