Folk/Roots – Studio 2 Session – John Murry (23/6/2017)

John Murry stunned many music fans when he released “The Graceless Age” in 2012 and the album made its way to the top of many lists with a variety of music fans (and influential music magazines) falling under it’s dark, gothic spell. Life for the artist afterwards was far from simple but John achieved some space and peace in Kilkenny, his home since 2013.
Despite this, the path to the follow up was harsh and occasionally traumatic and some false starts led to an EP but a full on release remained elusive. That changed because of a meeting of minds in Glasgow, leading to a breakthrough in Toronto. This proved crucial and this second album “A Short History Of Decay” was produced by the Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins and recorded in five days. It was never to be a part II but it has impressed people with it’s continuing exploration of life’s darker places and it’s more sparse feel and arrangements.
It’s always great to have John visit Studio 2 and on this occasion he was accompanied by Kilkenny based Ger Moloney. John being John and letting the moment take over, these are re-arranged, stripped down versions of the songs, leading the listener down unfamiliar paths to focus on the lyrical twists and flows, his trademark…
