A housing order for all birds and poultry has been enforced across Carlow and Kilkenny, starting today, as part of efforts to curb the spread of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu.
Poultry owners are now required to keep their birds indoors to minimize the risk of infection. Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon stressed the importance of strict biosecurity measures, urging farmers to thoroughly clean equipment, restrict access to poultry housing, and prevent wild bird contact to reduce the chances of contamination.
This move follows the discovery of avian flu in Northern Ireland, where a farm in County Tyrone was ordered to cull 64,000 birds over the weekend after the disease was detected.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to safeguard both bird health and public safety.
