Kilkenny suffered their heaviest recorded league defeat since 1953 yesterday as they were beaten 0–35 to 0–17 by Galway.
The result at Pearse Stadium saw Michael Donoghue’s side lay down a marker ahead of the counties’ meeting in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship in six weeks’ time.
Illness and injuries were mentioned after the game, but Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng said he did not want to use that as an excuse for the performance.
“Everybody that took to the field today was fit. And it’s just unacceptable from our side.
We were second to everything — they won every breaking ball. We didn’t win enough 50-50s at all there, from start to finish.
At no stage did we look like we were really getting back into it. That’s something obviously now we have to look at.
There’s a big gap to make up there. It’s a quiet dressing room there, everybody’s very disappointed. There’s nothing we can do, only work through it now.
Very disappointed, just from start to finish. Just lacked energy, very passive. Just really disappointed with that now, to be honest.”
Despite the disappointing result, Kilkenny’s Cian Kenny has been named on the GAA Hurling Team of the Week following his individual performances.
