The Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) have held what they called ” a very constructive briefing” in Brussels earlier today.
Meeting with Irish MEPs, the IBI called for more urgent action at domestic and European level on the promised provision of support for the public service content and news which the sector provides year-round.
At the IBI’s briefing with Ireland’s MEPs in Brussels today, support was expressed for its practical proposals aimed at protecting the viability of public service content on Ireland’s 34 local, regional, and national radio stations.
Speaking earlier on The KCLR Daily was KCLR CEO John Purcell, who is also the chair of the IBI.
He told the programme that “I would think that we (independent broadcasters in Ireland) would be amongst the frontrunners in terms of popularity and in terms of the listenership that we enjoy, and indeed the impact that we have on our local communities.”
He continued by saying that “I thought that it was significant that the Director of the Association of European Radio Stations said that she couldn’t believe that a country of 5 million people, could actually get an attendance of 11 MEPs at a briefing, and I think she was saying that it shows the importance of radio stations in our country.”
