Kilkenny County Council has passed a motion this week to begin the process of bidding to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, one of Ireland’s largest and most prestigious festivals.
The festival, last held in the county in the 1980s, attracts thousands of visitors each year and is a major cultural event.
The 2024 festival saw approximately 600,000 visitors to County Wexford, and Kilkenny is eager to bring this significant event back to the region.
The application process will assess factors such as accommodation availability, travel infrastructure, and venues suitable for competitions and social gatherings.
Local Labour Councillor Seán Ó hArgáin told KCLR News that securing the festival “would provide a major economic boost to Kilkenny, benefiting local businesses and the tourism industry.”
