A Kilkenny property is currently undergoing assessment to check its suitability to accommodate people fleeing war in Ukraine.
The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has confirmed to KCLR News that it received an offer of accommodation for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) at Wallslough Village, about 7km outside the city and just off the Bennettsbridge Road.
The property is being assessed as part of the Emergency Refurbishment (Ukraine) Project overseen by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to ascertain whether it’s suitable for future use following conversion/refurbishment works.
These works have not been undertaken and no BOTPs are as yet on site.
A spokesperson for Kilkenny County Council has told KCLR News that they “are aware that this property is under consideration by the Department of Children Equality Diversity Inclusion and Youth under the Emergency Ukrainian Refurbishment Programme”.
They add that “The property is being considered for short term accommodation for those fleeing the war in Ukraine, subject to all regulatory matters relating to its delivery being satisfied.”
And note; “There are significant compliance considerations to be addressed in relation to Planning, Building Control and Environment for which Kilkenny County Council have a regulatory role. We are also aware that the promoters are liaising with Uisce Eireann in relation to matters under their remit.”
