Kilkenny is set to receive a major boost to its tourism offerings with the launch of the “Museum of Medieval Kilkenny,” a project that will see an €8 million investment. This project will unite two key historic sites — The Tholsel and the Medieval Mile Museum (formerly St. Mary’s Church) — with the aim of creating one of Ireland’s premier visitor attractions.
The focus of this new initiative will be on enhancing The Tholsel building, with both internal and external improvements, including the installation of a lift to improve accessibility. The Tholsel will continue to serve as the seat of local government, while parts of the building, including the basement, will be transformed into a vibrant visitor experience.
Once completed, this Medieval Kilkenny Experience will offer an engaging and interactive journey through the city’s rich medieval past, set in the heart of Kilkenny’s historic Medieval Mile. The immersive experience will take visitors on a fun, fact-based exploration of “The Rich, The Poor, The Rogues, and The Righteous,” showcasing the darker side of Kilkenny’s history. Visitors will encounter infamous knights, powerful mayors, and wealthy medieval merchants, learning about the city’s intriguing past.
The official contract for the project was signed today in a ceremony attended by Kilkenny County Council representatives, project partners Fáilte Ireland, consultants K-Design Studios, and contractors Duggan Lynch Ltd. When completed, the project will not only highlight Kilkenny’s rich heritage but also offer a unique, family-friendly experience for both tourists and locals alike.
Cllr. Andrew McGuinness, Mayor of Kilkenny City, also expressed his delight noting “the interventions proposed to The Tholsel building, which is much loved by the people of the Kilkenny, will help safeguard it long into the future. The delivery of such an ambitious project will help copper-fasten Kilkenny City’s reputation as one of the countries top tourist destinations, bringing greater economic opportunities and dividends for its citizens,” adding “while also protecting and enhancing what many consider the centre of local democracy in Kilkenny City.”
Michael Duggan of Duggan Lynch Ltd., also shared their excitement: “We are honoured to work with Kilkenny County Council on this significant project. Our team is dedicated to delivering a high-quality end product that will celebrate the unique character of Kilkenny and contribute to the community’s vibrancy.”
Chief Executive of Kilkenny County Council, Lar Power, noted “This is an exciting time for Kilkenny and thanked Fáilte Ireland for their continued support in not just this project but in the Kilkenny Brand and in acknowledging the importance of Kilkenny as a destination to the south east region and to the wider Ireland’s Ancient East”
