A status yellow high temperature warning remains in place for Carlow, Kilkenny and 11 other counties until tomorrow morning, with the mercury set to hit 30 degrees in some parts today.
Kilkenny Weather’s Niall Dollard says the hot spell is set to continue into next week, ” the lovely warm, hot sun and ambient temperatures are continuing for the next number of days.”
“So temperatures, you know, turning very hot up to 29. We had 30 degrees in Kilkenny yesterday. So that’s 30 degrees we had in May, 30 degrees in June and now 30 degrees in July. It’s to continue like this up to Wednesday, at least.”
“There is a threat then on Thursday of some showers that could be thundery. I suppose some people will be looking for rainfall anyway. You know, the things are starting to dry up but up until Wednesday anyway, we’re expecting the same as what we have,” he added.
The HSE is warning everyone to stay hydrated while out enjoying the hot weather this weekend.
Certain groups are more vulnerable to the effects of heat, including older people, babies, young children and pregnant women.
Consultant in Public Health Medicine at the HSE National Health Protection, Dr. Caitriona Kelly describes the symptoms of over-heating, and what to do, “Heat exhaustion would include symptoms like excessive sweating, feeling of dizziness, headache, feeling sick.”
“If you are experiencing any of those symptoms or someone you’re with is experiencing those symptoms, bring them out of the heat, bring them into a shaded area, get plenty of water into them. If after 30 minutes or so, there’s no real improvement, I’d be seeking urgent medical help at that point,” she added.
