Irish Rail says that a long unused lift shaft at MacDonagh Junction in Kilkenny is not a priority for development.
The lift was originally built as part of a planned commercial project 18 years ago that never went ahead and would now require full refurbishment.
City councillors outlined their frustrations at a meeting earlier this week.
Barry Kenny, who is Communications Manager with Irish Rail, says that the facility may be completed, albeit some way into the future, telling KCLR News; “We do, I suppose, ultimately want to in the future expand the capacity of both the line and indeed the station, it certainly isn’t in any short term funding we have from the National Transport Authority so I don’t think, in public transport you never say never, but as it stands right now it’s not within our funded programme, that funded programme does need to address first and foremost stations around the network that may have no access to one of the platforms”.
