The bid to get Carlow town its own Domestic Violence Refuge has moved a step closer.
The former Monastery Hostel on the Old Dublin Road has been identified as a potential site for a ten-unit facility by Amber Women’s Refuge CLG with Carlow County Council, the Housing Agency and Cuan, the Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Agency.
It would meet the standards as set out by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Domestic Violence Refuge Accommodation: Project Brief Design Guidelines (March 2024) and Safe Ireland’s Safe Place – a Domestic Violence Refuge design guide.
It means Amber will now prepare a ‘Stage 1’ application under the Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS 1) for the site’s redevelopment, which has been submitted.
Naoimh Murphy is the Communications and Training Officer with Amber Women’s Refuge in Kilkenny and she told The KCLR Daily about it;
Justice Minister Helen McEntee, TD, has this reaction for KCLR;
And local Fianna Fáil TD Jennifer Murnane O’Connor too welcomed the update;
