Family Carers Ireland says progress has been made on phasing out the carers’ allowance, but more needs to be done.
The organisation held the first meeting of its new National Carers Council this morning, which aims to give people a voice in shaping policy and services.
Waiting lists and the abolition of the means test set the agenda at the gathering earlier.
Head of Communications and Policy with Family Carers Ireland, Catherine Cox is hopeful the means test will be gone in the coming years, noting; “We have seen significant progress but, and I’m sure there’s people shouting at me now on the radio, we absolutely need to see the means test abolished in full, but we have seen significant progress towards that goal and I believe we will see that happen in the next three years, within the lifetime of this government”.
