The Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin says there’s “sadness across Carlow” following Sunday’s M9 crash.
The incident on a stretch close to Moone in Kildare happened at approx 2:30am when a car with five teenagers, two from Carlow, drove the wrong way killing all onboard (find the death notice for one of those here).
It struck another vehicle which was en route to the airport – all four of its occupants, three sisters and a younger family member, remain in various hospitals in Dublin.
A Vigil will take place for them tomorrow (Friday) evening;
While a GoFundMe set up by a family friend has now broken the half a million euro mark (link to that here).
KCLR News’ Martin Quilty’s been hearing from Bishop Denis Nulty;
Meanwhile, Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher’s calling for deliberately driving the wrong way on a motorway to be treated as ‘attempted murder’ following the incident.
The incident has led to concerns about social media posts featuring such collisions with MEP Kelleher saying the current road traffic penalties don’t reflect the seriousness of the offence.
He adds anyone deliberately driving the wrong way puts lives at such obvious risk, and it should be treated as a serious criminal act.
