The long-awaited delivery of 24/7 cardiac care at University Hospital Waterford will finally come into operation in the first week of July.
The round the clock service, which was announced by Waterford TD and Minister of State Mary Butler on Monday, has been pursued for many years by campaigners from both Waterford and its neighbouring areas, including South Kilkenny.
Fine Gael Councillor and Piltown Municipal District Chair Pat Dunphy paid tribute to those who had fought to secure this service for the South East, telling KCLR News; “It is a huge relief to patients in Waterford and south Kilkenny because I know what a lot of patients face having to rush to Cork and what damage is being done, you know, we needed that 24/7 and I have to compliment the people over the years who attended meetings and demonstrations and everything like that to actually get it, to highlight it and to get it to this point so that’s great news, delighted to hear that”.
