Kilkenny looks set to be confirmed as a base for the new veterinary college.

Minister Charlie McConalogue yesterday told our Matt O’Keeffe that he and his colleagues were close to a decision and announcement on the first such facility outside of Dublin, while the Irish Farmers Journal reported the Taoiseach’s confirmation that that announcement is due today.

Kildalton College in Piltown has long been considered one of the hotly tipped sites to host the third level facility with the South East Technology University (SETU) and now it’s reported it will be one of two locations with an official announcement due when the Dáil resumes this afternoon.

The then Mayor of Kilkenny Cllr David Fitzgerald had raised the south Kilkenny site with Simon Harris two years ago when he was Minister for Higher Education – he’s been reacting to the reports of what Minister Patrick O’Donovan’s expected to announce;
