Retained fire fighters in Carlow, Kilkenny, and nationwide have voted to accept proposals from the Workplace Relations Commission to resolve their industrial dispute.
It follows intensive consultations last week and a secret ballot.
SIPTU has welcomed the news, but warned that while today’s vote ends the current strike, it doesn’t end that battle.
It comes after a protracted row over what the union described as poor terms and conditions for retained fire fighters.
Aiden Owens from Carlow Fire and Rescue says its a step in the right direction; “We’ll give the Government, the LGMA, the opportunity to do the right thing now within the pay talks coming up and hopefully now that he fire service nationwide will be put on a path of healing in the way that we can get the recruits that we need to sustain the fire service nationwide and in the interim some of the guys that are due for retirement, possibly they ,au be allowed to stay on an extra year or two”.
