30 new social homes have been announced for Kilkenny County, to be built by 2027, while in Carlow €3.5 million has been put towards the development of social housing.
It is believed that the majority of funding in Carlow will go towards the government’s second-hand acquisitions programme, which prioritises vulnerable groups such as older persons and persons with a disability.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, as part of a national package of €436m to meet social housing needs.
Of that funding €325m will go towards the government’s second-hand acquisitions programme.
Speaking to KCLR News, Carlow Kilkenny TD Catherine Callaghan said that it was a positive step, though more was needed.
“It’s a good day for the constituency, for both Carlow and Kilkenny”, she said, “I know that we need more, but we’re moving in the right direction, and the housing shortage that we have won’t be solved overnight, but it is in steps like this, continuous and consistent steps like this, that we will really be making an impact on the shortage of homes, and we will be creating more homes so people can live, work, raise a family, and run a business here across the constituency.”
