More than 40% of parents planning to send their child to a religious-run school say they would prefer it to be multi-denominational.
The findings come from the Department of Education’s latest Primary School Survey.
It also shows 13% of Mothers and Fathers would like English-language schools to become Gaelscoileanna, while 72% of those with children in single-sex schools favour a move to co-education.
Simon Lewis is Principal of Carlow Educate Together and says the denominational findings are the most surprising.
Schools now have until the end of September to consult with parents, staff and their local communities on possible changes.
