A 61-year-old man appeared in court, charged with possession of over 10 point 6 million euro worth of cocaine.
Michael Murphy, with an address on the Kilkenny/Waterford border, appeared before a special sitting of Gorey District Court last night.
Detective Garda Sean Lane, of Waterford Garda Station, told the court that Mr Murphy had been arrested in connection with the seizure of the drugs on March 18th.
He said the arrest came as part of an ‘intelligence-led’ operation, in which cocaine weighing 152 kilograms and worth â‚€10.65 million was discovered in a vehicle.
The discovery was made in what the detective described as a “sophisticated concealment” in the vehicle.
Investigators believe the drugs were loaded in Spain and transported to Ireland on behalf of several organised crime groups.
Judge Kevin Staunton refused Mr. Murphy bail and remanded him in custody to Cork Prison.
He will appear before Waterford district court via video link tomorrow.
