April 26th will become the ‘International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day’.
30 years after the disaster the United Nations has designated the date to raise awareness of the consequences of the nuclear explosion.
Millions of people continue to live in contaminated zones with exposure to radioactive pollution – while each year, children affected by the disaster spend time in Carlow and Kilkenny for respite.
Adi Roche is Founder of Chernobyl Children Ireland, she says they’ve been campaigning for a remembrance day for a long time, and they’re very happy that it’s happened now.
