2016 wasn’t a great year for Carlow Town and Kilkenny City when it comes to the IBAL litter league.
Figures released today show both have slipped down the table which was compiled by An Taisce for Irish Business Against Litter.
Sitting in 11th and 25th place of the litter league, it seems there’s room for improvement for both Kilkenny and Carlow.
Kilkenny, though it’s retained its Cleaner than European Norms status, has slipped out of the top 10 cleanest areas in the country to 11th place.
The city had been the overall winner on previous occasions.
The recycling facility at St Canice’s Church in Kilkenny let down the city, according to An Taisce, who carried out the survey.
It’s been described as a litter blackspot.
However, The Parade, Market Cross Shopping Centre, High Street and the train station were all exceptionally good sites.
Carlow Town, which is in 25th place out of 40, saw a drop in the number of Grade A sites from 8 to just 3 – and Aldi and a GAA sports grounds were listed as examples of where extra attention was needed.
Carlow’s recycle facility was not in good order either.
Overall, 70% of towns and cities surveyed were found to be clean to European norms compared to 85% two years ago.
