The Garda Representative Association says assaults on rank and file members in Carlow and Kilkenny happen more often than people might think.
The GRA’s annual conference is getting underway in earnest in Galway today, where amongst issues like pay, a motion calling for mandatory sentencing for assaults on Gardaí will be debated.
The association, which represents over 10,500 rank-and-file Gardai, is calling for an audit on the number and nature of assaults on its members, which frequently go unreported.
Speaking to KCLR News Carlow/Kilkenny GRA spokesman, Ger Comerford said just recently a local Garda had to take time off after being badly bitten.
He says they don’t want this legislation just for themselves but for others working on the frontline like emergency, medical and ambulance personnel.
