St Luke’s Hospital confirm fresh outbreak of superbug

The HSE has confirmed a fresh outbreak of a superbug at St Luke’s Hospital which has led to a ward being shut down.

In February of this year a case of CRE was identified in Surgical Ward 1 and that was then shut down as it needed a full renovation to ensure it was fit for use again.

However, it’s now emerged that there has been a fresh outbreak of another similar superbug called CPE, in recent weeks after it was detected in two patients.

The ward closure has added to the pressures being experienced in the hospital where record numbers have had to wait on trolleys for admission.

Hospital consultant Ray O Sullivan says its unfortunate but the closure was necessary.
