More than 70% of people in both Carlow and Kilkenny travel to work by car – almost 10% more than the national average.

That’s according to the latest census figures released by the CSO.

The majority of working people who live locally, are also working locally.

The census 2016 data is showing that in Carlow, there were 10,972 people working within the county, and 6,290 people commuting from Carlow to other counties.

However, 5,037 people from other counties were then commuting into Carlow for work.

In Kilkenny, 23,145 residents of the county were working within the county, and just over 10,000 were working elsewhere.

A further 6,786 were also coming into Kilkenny from other counties.

Of the working population, 76% in Kilkenny travelled to work by car, while 73% did so in Carlow – well above the national average of 63%.

Car is also the main mode of transport for school children, with 64% travelling by car to Carlow primary schools, and 63% in Kilkenny.

The least-used form of transport across the board is the bicycle.
