The Irish government is not doing enough to protect areas like Mount Leinster in Carlow from devastating wildfires.

That’s according to the Irish Wildlife Trust who have now complained to the European Commission after 97 illegal fires were recorded across Ireland between March and May of this year.

A number of those fires were in the Blackstairs Mountains on the Carlow/Wexford border and have impacted hugely on the wildlife population there.

The Wildlife Trust, told KCLR News that it’s simply not good enough at this stage.

According to the Trust, birds like the Curlew, the Golden Eagle, the Twite, and the Hen Harrier were all once common upland birds but they’re now facing extinction because of these fires.

And Campaign Officer, Pádraic Fogarty says that Mount Leinster is no exception.
