The critically acclaimed quartet Clang Sayne perform at Sofa Sessions at Billy Byrne’s pub (curated by Irish Times jazz critic Cormac Larkin) on Thursday September 28th as part of a eight-date Irish tour. The group will be performing songs from their Music Network funded album ‘The Round Soul Of The World’.
Clang Sayne was formed by Wexford-based Laura Hyland (voice/guitar) to fuse myriad influences spanning folk song, classical music and literature into a unique concert experience. Vocalist and guitarist Laura Hyland has a Sandy Denny-like classic folk voice and wraps it around timeless lyrics of nature, life, love and mortality as well as settings of texts by Dorothy Parker and other poets.
Hyland is joined by Judith Ring (voice/cello), Matthew Jacobson (drums/voice) and Carolyn Goodwin (bass clarinet/voice) in an approach to song-craft that has been described as “daring and unforgettable”.
On the day of the session, Laura travelled to Kilkenny and in Studio 2 showed the delicate edges of two songs, just her voice and guitar, very intimate readings of the songs that breathe deeply with the added music heft of her musical partners on the recorded versions. We chatted for ages and finally recorded some of it, where you’ll get a sense of how Laura composes and approaches each performance as a moment to capture the energy that’s generated when people totally committed to that shared moment respond. A lovely morning and it whets the appetite for the gig on the 28th.
