Boost Your Business – Green Efficiency Competition: A New Opportunity for Local Businesses in Carlow & Kilkenny

In today’s rapidly changing business environment, sustainability has emerged as a critical factor for success. Not only is there growing pressure from consumers and regulators for businesses to adopt greener practices, but the benefits of doing so—such as improved efficiency and cost savings—are becoming increasingly clear. Recognizing this, KCLR, in collaboration with the Carlow & Kilkenny Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs), is proud to introduce the Boost Your Business – Green Efficiency Competition.

John Purcell , CEO of KCLR said “KCLR is delighted to be working with Carlow & Kilkenny Local Enterprise Offices on this competition. We know that adopting  green practices isn’t just about doing what’s right for the environment—it’s also a strategic business move. As an SME ourselves,  we’ve found that going green has helped us cut costs, attract eco-conscious customers, and differentiate ourselves in a competitive market. Plus, it future-proofs our business against regulatory changes and enhances our brand reputation. Going green is an investment in sustainability that pays off across the board.”

This exciting new initiative is designed to help small businesses in Carlow and Kilkenny take meaningful steps towards sustainability. The competition provides a unique opportunity for businesses to connect with a green consultant who will offer expert guidance on making small yet impactful changes that benefit both the environment and the bottom line. These changes, while often straightforward, can lead to significant improvements in resource efficiency, cost savings, and overall business performance.

One of the standout features of this competition is the support it offers to participants. Each eligible finalist will receive personalized consultancy, which could pave the way for a €10,000 grant to further invest in green initiatives. This financial support is intended to help businesses implement the changes identified during the consultation, ensuring they can continue to grow sustainably.

In addition to the consultancy and potential grant, the competition offers further incentives for participation. Two overall winners—one from Kilkenny and one from Carlow—will be awarded a €1,000 advertising package from KCLR and €1,000 in business marketing support from the Local Enterprise Offices. These prizes are designed to help businesses not only become more sustainable but also to reach new customers and markets.

The importance of developing a greener policy cannot be overstated. Businesses that embrace sustainability can expect to see increased cost savings, as efficient resource use leads to lower energy, water, and material expenses. Furthermore, reducing a business’s environmental footprint enhances its corporate image, making it more attractive to customers who prioritize sustainability. In a world increasingly affected by climate change, businesses that adopt sustainable practices also position themselves to be more resilient against the impacts of environmental disruptions.

The Boost Your Business – Green Efficiency Competition is open to businesses with 1-50 employees that are established, registered, and operating within the Carlow and Kilkenny regions. Eligible businesses must operate in the commercial sphere, with an annual turnover exceeding €30,000 and a trading history of more than six months. Certain industries, such as primary agriculture, gambling, adult entertainment, and unauthorized cannabis products, are excluded from participation. Importantly, companies that are part of a holding group, franchise, or linked companies are limited to one application.

Welcoming the competition , Cllr. Fergal Browne , Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said “We are delighted to be working with KCLR & Kilkenny County Council Local Enterprise Office on this competition”. I know “ In today’s world, companies that invest in sustainability aren’t just protecting our planet; they’re securing their future. By embracing green practices, they not only reduce environmental impact but also drive innovation, create jobs, and set the standard for responsible leadership in the global economy”.

For businesses that meet the eligibility criteria, this competition represents a valuable opportunity to not only contribute to a more sustainable future but also to gain financial and marketing support that can drive growth. The competition is set to run until 7th October 2024.

KCLR and the Carlow & Kilkenny Local Enterprise Offices are enthusiastic about the potential impact of the Boost Your Business – Green Efficiency Competition. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to fostering sustainable business practices that benefit both the local economy and the environment. Businesses that participate in the competition will be taking an important step towards sustainability, and in doing so, will position themselves as leaders in the community.

Sarah Byrne & John Mulcahy from the Local Enterprise Offices said “Investing in green initiatives is not just an ethical choice; it’s a smart financial decision. By prioritizing sustainability, we’re not only protecting the environment but also driving long-term profitability, reducing operational costs, and opening doors to new markets. In the Local Enterprise Offices we know that green investments are the future, and those who embrace them now will lead the way in tomorrow’s economy”.

This competition is more than just a chance to win prizes—it’s an opportunity to make a real difference, both for your business and for the world around you. If you’re a business owner in Carlow or Kilkenny, now is the time to consider how sustainability can boost your business and to take advantage of the support and opportunities this competition offers.
