A proposal by US officials to check the social media history of tourists is being condemned as a “digital strip search”.
Visitors, including those from Ireland, may have the last five years of their social media investigated by authorities before they’re allowed to enter the States.
US President Donald Trump last night endorsed the proposal, saying they don’t want the “wrong people” coming there.
Carlow Kilkenny based Social Democrats Senator Patricia Stephenson says it’s hypocritical from the supposed “Land of the Free”; “It’s a direct attack on people’s freedoms and privacy which, you know, the US says that they uphold, it’s a bit like a digital strip-search to be honest with you and we wouldn’t want our citizens being strip-searched when they’re entering the US as common practice either”.
