The maximum monthly payment for the Drugs Payment Scheme has not been reduced since 2022, prompting calls for a price cut that would provide significant relief to families.
That is the view of Carlow County Councillor Ben Ward.
The Fine Gael representative believes the maximum monthly contribution under the Drugs Payment Scheme should be reduced.
Councillor Ward told KCLR News what such a reduction would mean for households and how it could be achieved.
“I know that people are struggling with the cost of living at the moment and I think this is one thing that the government could do to try and help people.” said Ben.
“Currently they cap on the maximum payment on the drug’s payment scheme is €80 per month and I’m calling for them to reduce it to €60 per month and that would make a massive difference for people especially people who are using this scheme are accessing prescribed vital medicine so they need it so it’s something that they can’t avoid the cost of so I think this will make a big difference for them if it was reduced.” he added.
