A white linen handkerchief, better known as the “flag of truce” used by Captain Michael William O’Reilly to signal surrender at the end of the 1916 Easter Rising sold at auction in Castlecomer today for €62,000.
The handkerchief originally had an estimated value of €10,000 to €15,000.
George Fonsie Mealy was on the gavel yesterday and he spoke to Brian Redmond on The KCLR Daily about the sale.
