Families caring for loved ones are under huge financial and emotional pressure, with respite care still out of reach for many.
So says Danielle Dunne, Support Manager for Family Carers Ireland, who also claimed that 75% of carers have never received respite, according to a recent survey representing carers nationwide.
It comes after a meeting of the organisation in Kilkenny yesterday, where they outlined their priorities for Budget 2027.
Ms. Dunne says scrapping the Carer’s Allowance means test would remove barriers and allow more carers to access vital financial support.
“There’s also an administrative burden associated with that means test as well, so you have to get all of your account statements for a couple of months. You know, if someone is self-employed, they have to produce their statement of accounts from their employment. So, there’s many other administrative tasks within that that are, I suppose, roadblocks for people.” she added.
