It’s been quite a weekend for Old Leighlin, with the club adding another Carlow Ladies Football Championship to their honours list.
Old Leighlin defeated Bennekerry-Tinryland by 3-11 to 1-7 to claim their second championship in a row and their 12th county title.
It was also the tenth year in succession that Old Leighlin and Bennekerry-Tinryland have met in the showpiece of Carlow ladies football.
Rachel Sawyer was named the Kevin Kelly Pharmacy Player of the Match after scoring 2-2 in the victory, and she was delighted to see Old Leighlin get over the line.
“It’s always good to get to a county final, and to get over the line, it’s brilliant.
“We executed our game plan and everyone worked hard.
“The first few minutes we were slow to get going. We did have good possession, but I think after we got a score or two, you could see our energy lifting up a bit.
“We kept it going in the first half and set us up nicely for the second half.”
Sawyer won’t have much time to celebrate, however, with another county final already on the horizon.
She is one of a number of dual players preparing for next weekend’s Carlow Senior Camogie Final, where she represents Naomh Bríd.
They will face Mount Leinster Rangers in the decider, giving Sawyer the opportunity to go in search of a remarkable championship double after helping Old Leighlin to another ladies football title.
