Fire crews remain at the scene of a large fire at a disused factory in Carlow Town.
It’s believed the fire started at around half four yesterday afternoon at the former Erin foods factory on Dr Cullen Road – but shortly after 10 o’clock last night it had been contained to a single section.
The local fire service is continuing to dampen down the area and is working to remove 900 bales of straw from there.
All Roads around the area have re-opened and the scene is being preserved by Gardai.
The County Council and EPA will be assessing it later today.
Fire Chief Ger Guerin says people living in the area no longer need to stay indoors but he has advised to keep doors and windows closed as the smoke coming from the smoldering bales has a smell and can seep into houses.
Fire crews worked in temperatures of -2 last night and every fire fighter in the county was on duty at some stage during the fire.
