Local GP says family doctors may struggle to offer ‘same-day service’ in future

A local GP says most practices in Carlow & Kilkenny are signing up to the Free GP care for under 6’s.

Latest figures show just over 70 percent of local doctors have signed the contracts to provide the initiative.

Dr Tadhg Crowley told KCLR Live this morning there has been a backlog in processing the contracts and the actual figure is probably closer to 85 or 90 percent.

He says many doctors were slow to sign up to the scheme for a reason but they have to go with it now.

Dr Crowley says the workload of GP’s will increase with the rollout of the scheme.

And he warned that if similar initiatives follow then doctors practices may struggle to offer a ‘same day service.
