Kilkenny County Council urged to purchase 5 World War 1 medals

A local war commemorative group are calling on Kilkenny County Council to purchase 5 World War 1 medals that are going to auction in London soon.

The medals belong to Callan-man John Maher who fought and died in the Great War.

Callan War Memorial Committee have recently been granted permission to erect a statue in the town in honour of those who participated in the war, using money they’ve raised locally.

Committee member, Seán Butler says they don’t have the funds to purchase these medals themselves.
