Dog owners are being reminded to be in control of their pets.
One farmer in Ballyfoyle recently lost 12 sheep to a pair of dogs and there’s been a number of similar incidents reported around the country in recent weeks.
The Irish Farmers Association says 85% of dogs are now microchipped & is calling for a single database to be introduced with controls on change of ownership so that all owners are kept accountable.
Brian Nicholson is the IFA Kilkenny sheep chairman. He says it’s unreal what a couple of stray dogs can do to a flock of sheep.
But he says the responsibility lies with the owners.
